LZ Labs is an internal codename for a custom map production toolkit I developed around a recurring newsroom graphics workflow.
The tool set extends After Effects and GEOlayers 3 with faster ways to work with data in bulk.
LZ Labs is an internal toolkit I developed for BILD’s show Lagezentrum’s map workflow for video production. It started as a small script for fetching locations in bulk, then grew into a larger suite of tools for building, cleaning, labeling, and preparing broadcast maps in After Effects.
This was especially demanding for Ukraine coverage. The team worked with unfamiliar geography, Cyrillic source names, German transliteration, inconsistent spellings, repeated place names, and unclear settlement types. Around some map areas, a single search could return too much noise for a designer to process manually in the time available.
